Théâtre de l’Atelier

Poster concepts for a theatrical recreation of 1988’s famous televised debate between Jacques Chirac and François Mitterrand.

During the debate, the presidential candidates treated each other “with a frostiness that degenerated at times into open hostility” (New York Times). It was riveting to watch, and the debate has gone down in history as one of the most intense face-à-face in French politics.

Chirac and Mitterrand’s distinctive profiles made the choice of silhouetted illustrations an obvious solution. Because their exchanges bordered on quasi combat, another solution was inspired by the typography on vintage boxing posters.
